DIY Not-So-Short Shorts

Hey everyone. It’s another week and I’m back with a new project. It’s quick and easy. I used a beautiful Malaysian cotton fabric, a gift from a friend, which I’ve had for several months but didn’t quite know what to make. It wasn’t big enough for a dress and I wasn’t “feeling” it as a bag. I forgot about the fabric until now. This isn’t surprising because since I became a Sewista, I hoard fabric like there is no tomorrow.

I tend to just make unplanned visits to the fabric store to see what’s on sale and I spend hours scouring various websites for vibrant prints. it’s not like I always know what I want to use them for but I like to imagine the style possibilities. You just never know when one of the fabric in your stash suddenly becomes perfect for a particular project.

This weekend, I wanted to try my hands at making shorts but there was no way I was going to sacrifice my Ankara in case I made a total mess. But surprisingly, it turned out better than expected without much effort from my part. It fits like something I could have bought in the store and what’s even better is that they are not too short. I’ll definitely be making more of this. I’m already fantasizing about using Denim, Ankara and Adire.

I made this using Simplicity 1112 pattern view D. This is another simple pattern and a great beginner project. There were only five pattern pieces and the steps on the instruction sheet were easy to follow. You only need fabric and elastic for the casing (waist band). Try making this and let me know what you think.

Have a great week and thanks for visiting!
